Virological Surveillance

Virological surveillance helps identify the specific viruses causing illness. Some patients with flu-like symptoms are offered a swab, which is tested in a laboratory (SA Pathology) to detect viruses such as influenza and other respiratory infections.
This helps ASPREN understand exactly which viruses are circulating and how they change over time. When combined with symptom data, this provides a clearer picture of respiratory illness in the community.
