What does participation involve?

Participation in ASPREN is designed to be flexible and low-burden, allowing clinicians to choose their level of involvement.  Practices can participate at a whole-of-practice level or nominate individual GPs or nurse practitioners to take part in syndromic surveillance.
Participation can also be scaled over time. Practices may begin with syndromic surveillance only (reporting patient presentations), with the option to add virological surveillance (swab collection) at any stage.
Virological surveillance is an optional add-on for syndromic reporters and can be opted into or out of at any time, depending on capacity and preference.  
While virological surveillance provides valuable insight into circulating viruses, both forms of participation contribute meaningfully to national surveillance.
